From your mind to your heart

I recently read that the longest journey we take in life is from our minds to our hearts. Wow, how true! This insight blew me away because I read it in transit! That is in transit both figuratively and literally, as I was making some major decisions regarding following my passion.

My last post was about leaving your fear behind and following your calling and purpose. It is amazing what happens when you speak and write down your inner most thoughts and emotions and when you pause to listen to your heart which is the core of who you are. At the end of that post, I wrote that “I have left”. That has turned out to be my prophecy over my life! Who says prophets only existed in the old days as described in the bible with rugged clothes and with countenances that display wisdom and seasoned Godly character? (Isn’t that how you envision Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the rest)

Exactly 117 days from the day I wrote that post, I sold my business in order to focus on my true calling which is to teach, edify, and inspire people to reach their full God given potential. In my long journey from my mind to my heart, I have finally scaled the mountain of indecision and fear located squarely on the path from my mind to my heart! I am exhausted and spent from the climb but the view from the top of this mountain and the joy of conquering it is so exhilarating and energizing because from a distance I can see the mountain top of purpose – my next destination!! I literally feel like a NASCAR race car that has just been flagged off for the real race after taking many laps around the race track never quite committing to the real race! I woke up at 4 am this morning! Because I don’t want to miss a minute of my purposeful day!!!

When you follow your heart and your purpose, you look forward to the day ahead and wake up way before your alarm rather than being startled by your alarm to get up and endure another day! No force can stop a man or woman who knows their purpose and is will stake everything to live it out.

My friend, your heart is the most powerful organ you have. Your heart forms the core of who you are. Look at the back of your bible and see how many times the bible references the heart as opposed to your mind. Here are a few powerful references.

Proverbs: 27:19 As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.

Deut 4:29 But if from there you seek the lord your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the lord your God and obey him.

Deut 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The lord our God, the lord is one. Love the lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and your gates.

Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself in the lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

I was going to close this paragraph of the post by saying that the reason it is imperative you know your heart is your core and the most uncorrupted source of your God given purpose is so that you protect it, and then I read this in the bible.

Proverbs 4:21 GUARD YOUR HEART FOR IT IS THE WELLSPRING OF LIFE!

OMG, this verse captures the ESSENSE of what I am struggling to tell you today – YOUR HEART IS THE WELLSPRING OF LIFE!

Look up the definition of WELLSPRING in your dictionary – an original and bountiful source of something, the source of a stream or spring, a source or supply of anything, especially when considered inexhaustible. Wow!

Your heart is the source of the original and bountiful you as created by God in your mother’s womb.

Your heart is the source of your stream of joy, fulfillment, love, purpose, wealth, health, and everything you have ever desired.

Your heart is the inexhaustible source of the spirit that God breathed in to you when you were created in the depths of your mother’s womb.

Pardon the length of this post but this is what is pouring from my heart to stir yours.

If you sit still and listen in a quiet room, the only thing you hear or feel is your heart. Put your hand on your heart and feel your heart beat, the power and core of who you are and the source of everything God deposited into you. You cannot consistently hear any other organ in your body as you can your heart and it continues 24/7 whether you are awake or not! (except for the occasional grumbling of your belly when hungry, and it is well, occassional – more so for some than others)  Put your hands on the sides of your head. Can you hear your mind? No, except you can feel the pulse and blood flow which begins in the wellspring of your heart.

Have you ever realized that even for people who have fallen to drugs or alcoholism, or any other addiction, regardless of how degraded and corrupted their minds may be, if you get close enough to them, spend time and pause to know them, you will discover the desperate purity, and the power of God’s original spirit that still resides in their heart? It is because the heart is resilient, it can withstand the beating and devastation of a broken life and remain a wellspring now matter how small.

It is the same for your heart. Regardless of how desperate and discouraged you may feel with where you are in your life or regarding your dreams that seem to have slipped away, your heart remains your wellspring. Your mind may have taken a beating over the years. You may have lost your confidence. You may be paralyzed by the fear of failure as your thoughts constantly remind you of your short comings. But your heart remains your wellspring – the original source of who you are as God created you to be.

Everything that threatens to stop you exists in your mind not your heart. Fear (False Emotions Appearing Real), lack of confidence, confusion and lack of clarity. All these hindrances have accumulated in your mind over the years but you were not born with them. You have learned to feel and think as you have regarding all these insecurities. Let your heart, your wellspring guide you as you take bold steps towards your purpose and the life God has designed for you.

So what do you need to do?

1) Guard your heart – seek God’s face, read and meditate on his word, and ask him to guide you as you take bold steps from following your mind to following your heart. Yes you will have to take steps even when unsure. Turn away from the influence of this world’s culture of entertainment, immediate gratification, seductive materialism and fashion, and literature devoid of any purposeful knowledge or nourishment which powerfully emanates from the never ending source of media (the world’s version of a wellspring!)

2) Once you spend time searching God and his calling over your life, let the wellspring of your heart guide your thoughts and your actions.

3) Plan and spend your time purposeful and deliberately towards your purpose and calling. Never let a day find you without a plan! Each one of us has 24 hours a day – the richest man and the poorest alike. You can’t buy or bargain for more or less (not sure why anyone would bargain for less but nonetheless you get the point)

4) Never give up searching and pursuing your calling.

5) Link up with people who are living out their passion. Get a coach if you need to! I did!

6) Do not live the point of inspiration and decision without taking some action, any action that will get you started.

  1. This has really ministered to me! The constancy of my heart’s pounding is perhaps the only stable and consistent rhythm my body knows, meaning even in the physical realms, I should rely on the heart to set pace for my life. And if I fill it with love, joy, faith, purpose, positivity, determination, goodwill and all that good stuff -meaning if you cut any part of me, just like blood these things ooz out, then I am operating from the wellspring! And that’s a place of fulfillment. PROFOUND!
